Dunhill reinterprets the Edwardian-era driver’s watch in a two-part pink gold and ceramic case of entirely modern sensibility designed by Tom Bolt. The Carwatch’s most distinctive feature is its shaped sapphire crystal that aids legibility when the watch is viewed from a low angle, as when gripping a steering wheel or the handlebars of a motorcycle.
The automatic mechanical movement is Swiss-made and includes a date function, displayed through an aperture a 6. The rest of the dial is devoted to a central minutes and seconds track surrounded by radiating bevelled hour markers. Below the crystal at the front of the watch is an engraved “license plate” that can be interchanged with a blank plate for personalized engraving. The watch is fitted with a calfskin strap and is packaged with a tool kit and an additional driver’s strap and stainless steel bracelet. Telephone 212.753.9292.
Like the reintroduction of the Mini motorcar over a decade ago, this reinterpretation of Big Pilot by IWC is better than the original. This 1st series Platinum example is of course the top of the top.
